Introduction to IP Restriction and Geo-Restriction in Zoho People
In the realm of digital workforce management, Zoho People introduces two key security features: IP Restriction and Geo-Restriction.
These features are available across all plans, including the Premium and Enterprise plans.
What is IP Restriction in Zoho People?
IP restriction, or Internet Protocol restriction, is a security feature that allows organizations to control access to their systems or modules based on specific IP addresses or IP address ranges. Each device connected to the internet has a unique IP address, and IP restriction involves defining which IP addresses are allowed or denied access to a particular system.
In the context of Zoho People's Attendance module, IP restrictions can be set to regulate where employees can mark their attendance. For example, if an organization wants to ensure that attendance is only marked from within the office premises, they can specify the range of IP addresses associated with their office network. This prevents employees from marking attendance from outside the specified IP range, adding an extra layer of security and control.
Steps to Set IP Restriction in Zoho People
1. Access Settings: Click on the gear icon, navigate to Allowed IPs under User Access Control, and select Add IP Restriction.
2. Define IP Range: Specify the allowed IP range.
3. Choose Module: Select the module for which the IP restriction is applicable (e.g., Attendance, Timesheet, or Files).
4. Applicable Groups: Define the groups (location, department, designation, role, or employee) to which the IP restriction applies.
5. Exceptions: Exclude specific locations, designations, or employees if necessary.
6. Submit: Save the configured IP restriction.
Geo-Restriction
Geo-restriction, or geographical restriction, involves setting boundaries on a map within which certain actions or accesses are allowed or denied. In the context of Zoho People, Geo-restriction is utilized to define a location range within which employees can mark their attendance.
This feature is particularly beneficial for organizations that want to track attendance based on physical locations. For instance, an organization may want to restrict attendance marking to specific regions or offices. Geo-restriction enables the organization to set a range on the map and prevent attendance marking from any location outside of the specified range.
Steps to Set Geo-Restriction in Zoho People
1. Access Geo Restriction: Navigate to Settings (gear icon) > Geo Restriction under User Access Control and click Add Geo Restriction.
2. Enable Location: Ensure that you allow your web browser to access your location. (This view may vary depending on the browser you use.)
3. Define Applicable Groups: Select the groups (location, department, designation, role, or employee) to which the Geo restriction applies.
4. Exceptions: Exclude specific locations, designations, or employees if necessary.
5. Define Geo Range: Use the search tab to locate the starting point on the map, pin the location, and use the drawing tool to mark the range with shapes like circles or rectangles.
6. Submit: Save the configured Geo restriction.
In summary, IP restriction focuses on controlling access based on specific IP addresses, while Geo-restriction adds a geographical dimension by defining boundaries on a map within which certain actions or accesses are allowed or denied. Both features contribute to enhanced security and control in attendance management within Zoho People.
